Enteral nutrition on intensive care unit: a protocol based approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Underfeeding is still reported as a major therapeutic failure in intensive care units (ICU), despite the increasing recognition of nutritional support as a predictor of patients’ outcome. Early optimized enteral nutrition is reported to diminish infectious events, length of stay (LoS) and, with less preponderance. Implementation of nutritional protocols is likely to improve enteral feeding in ICUs.

Validation of the Canadian clinical practice guidelines for nutrition support in mechanically ventilated, critically ill adult patients: results of a prospective observational study.
OBJECTIVE Recently, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for the provision of nutrition support in the critical care setting have been developed. To validate these guidelines, we hypothesized that intensive care units whose practice, on average, was more consistent with the guidelines would have greater success in providing enteral nutrition. DESIGN Prospective observational study. S...
متن کاملWhat Is "Best Achievable" Practice in Implementing the Enhanced Protein-Energy Provision via the Enteral Route Feeding Protocol in Intensive Care Units in the United States? Results of a Multicenter, Quality Improvement Collaborative.
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine what was "best achievable practice" with the implementation of a novel enteral feeding protocol (Enhanced Protein-Energy Provision via the Enteral Route Feeding Protocol [PEP uP protocol]). METHODS This study was a multicenter quality improvement collaborative wherein we describe nutrition practices and outcomes within PEP uP sites. We rep...
متن کاملImproving enteral delivery through the adoption of the “Feed Early Enteral Diet adequately for Maximum Effect (FEED ME)” protocol in a surgical trauma ICU: a quality improvement review.
BACKGROUND Despite the research supporting adequate enteral nutrition (EN) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, underfeeding is still common. This quality improvement (QI) project was done to determine the effect of "volume-based" feeding on adequacy of EN delivery and provision of calories and protein in a surgical/trauma ICU (STICU). MATERIALS AND METHODS Mechanically ventilated STICU pat...
متن کاملComparing Two Methods of Enteral Nutrition in Terms of their Complications and the Time Needed to Reach Goal Calorie in Children Hospitalized in ICU
Background Nutrition support and noticing the required goal calories in patients having critical conditions are essential aspects of medical care in preventing malnutrition in these patients. Materials and Methods This research is a clinical trial which was done on 60 children aging between 5 to 17 years old hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Shiraz’s Namazee hospital, South West of I...
متن کاملComparison of the Effects of Intralipid 10% and 20% on Peripheral Catheter Ablation in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Background: Energy deficit is a common and serious problem in pediatric intensive care units. Parenteral nutrition, either alone or in combination with enteral nutrition, can improve nutrient delivery in critically ill patients by preventing or correcting the energy deficit and improving the outcomes. Intralipid 10% and 20% are lipid emulsions, widely used in parenteral nutrition. Despite sever...
